Why it's hard to break habits with will power

Updated: Sep 7, 2023

A problem, an event does not prescribe an outcome - You have choice.

The conscious mind – apparently about 10% of the mind, is the logical part.

The rest is the unconscious mind, we don’t have awareness of that a lot of the time, it’s where all the other things are.

Most problems are not logical they are in the unconscious mind – caused by the unconscious mind having made a decision, a choice. It’s generally not something that you’ve consciously or logically chosen.

Someone who smokes pays for a packet of cigarettes which clearly states ‘’smoking kills’’ and displays images the terrible diseases that it is proven smoking can cause.

Is it logical then that anyone would smoke? It’s not logical at all.

But plenty of people do it, why? because its psychological.

It involves emotion, it involves beliefs and values and habits and memories – stuff of the unconscious.

That’s why habits are hard to break by consciously changing them with will power – the only skill the logical mind has.

Yes of course you can try to break a habit with will power but isn’t that like running up an escalator that is going down? you have to really work hard to get there. Whereas at the unconscious level, with hypnosis, the elevator is just turned off while you run up and then is turned back on again.

You don’t have to work against yourself.

Because working in the conscious is not where the problem lies, so will power will be limited.
